VHS Speech and Debate Students Qualify for Nationals

For the first time in more than twenty years, students from the Vashon High School Speech and Debate team have qualified to compete in Main Events at the National Speech and Debate Association (formerly the National Forensics League) National Tournament.
On March 7, four team members competed at the Western Washington District Qualifiers Tournament at Auburn Riverside High School. Junior Hannah Hillis placed 3rd in Dramatic Interpretation, and junior Iylaf Al Mustafa placed 2nd in Informative Speaking, earning both students spots at the national tournament. Hillis and Al Mustafa have also qualified for the Washington State Tournament, which will be held at the University of Puget Sound later this month.
Junior Emily Rock advanced to the semifinal round against some of the state’s top competitors and is eligible to attend Nationals as an alternate in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Freshman Carter Harmon will also attend Nationals after stepping aside from Duo Interpretation so Hillis could compete in her individual event. Harmon and Rock will compete in Supplemental Events at Nationals.
The National Tournament will take place in Richmond, Virginia, in June. Because travel costs are significant, the team will be fundraising to help cover airfare, lodging, transportation, and meals. Community members who would like to support the team can donate through via this Go Fan link or contribute to the team’s ASB fund through the school.
